How much vermicompost to use: pots, beds, lawns, trees and fields

Short answer: for new pots, mix 1 part vermicompost with 3 parts soil. For plants already growing, mix 100–200 g into the topsoil of each pot every 30–45 days. For garden beds use 1 kg per 10 sq ft, for lawns 1 kg per 10 sq m, for fruit trees 2–10 kg per tree twice a year, and for farm fields 1–3 tonnes per acre.

These are the same rates printed on our packs and used by the dosage calculator. Vermicompost is gentle and will not burn roots the way raw dung or urea can, but more is not always better: pure vermicompost holds too much water for most pots.

How much vermicompost per pot?

Measure the pot across the top. The table shows how much to mix in when you fill a new pot (1 part vermicompost to 3 parts soil), and how much to add when you feed a plant that is already growing.

If you use cocopeat, keep the same 1:3 ratio and count the cocopeat as part of the soil.

Vegetable beds and kitchen gardens

  • Before planting: spread 1 kg per 10 sq ft and mix it into the top 10–15 cm.
  • When transplanting: add a fistful to each planting hole.
  • Between crops: repeat before every new sowing. A 4 ft × 10 ft bed needs about 4 kg.

Lawns

Mow short and rake out dead grass, then spread 1 kg per 10 sq m (about 108 sq ft) and water lightly. A 500 sq ft lawn needs about 5 kg. The best times in North India are February–March and again after the monsoon.

Fruit trees

Loosen the soil in a ring around the trunk, under the outer edge of the leaves. Use 2–5 kg for a young tree and 5–10 kg for a mature tree, cover with mulch and water. Repeat twice a year.

Farm fields

Apply at land preparation, before sowing or transplanting: 2–3 tonnes per acre for vegetables and 1–2 tonnes per acre for wheat, paddy or maize. For orders above 1 tonne, ask us on WhatsApp for a farm-gate price.

Three common mistakes

  1. Planting straight into pure vermicompost. It stays wet and roots can rot. Always mix it with soil.
  2. Leaving it on the surface. Sunlight dries it out and kills the microbes. Mix it into the top few centimetres and water.
  3. Feeding once and forgetting. Pots lose nutrients with every watering. Feed every 30–45 days in the growing season.
